Darlinghurst.

It’s a dry-cleaning business, but behind the facade lies a bright modern two storey home with district views. 

This Darlinghurst terrace renovation was layered with complexity and required SBR Group to work closely with the architect.  On one hand, there were strict commercial BCA regulations to follow, neighbouring walls to consider and a warm modern home to build – all this in a terrace that is over a century old!

SBR Group firstly, ensured the terrace house was structurally sound.  Prior to demolition, risk management was carefully planned, working with adjoining properties to prop and support neighbouring terrace houses during the build to protect them.

The commercial property included clever design from our team, such as the roller garage door with passage gate, as well as strategically and aesthetically placed extinguishers, sprinklers, and ventilation, to meet BCA regulations and fire access compliance.  

The original two-bedroom terrace upstairs has been converted into a three-bedroom home using durable materials with appealing finishes in neutral tones.  Maximising the natural light from the front and, back and from the middle spiral staircase, to open plan living areas. 

The new attic accessed by a cast-iron spiral staircase is now a special place.  An oasis from the hustle and bustle of city life.  Swing open glass doors to an entertainer’s deck designed for sundowners and canapes with district views.  Its original brick walls, a nod to its nostalgic past, and sloping ceilings hide smartly positioned storage for modern living.

Build details: Renovating a century old 4 storey Darlinghurst mixed-use terrace to meet building codes for the commercial property on street level and basement and residential property on upper terrace levels.  Despite the small footprint of the upper terrace level, the home was updated to modern standards with clever storage and attic addition to further capitalise on this inner city, central location.
