For perhaps the smallest room in our house, you demand a lot from your bathroom.  You want it to be functional, be easy to clean and yet be a place filled with indulgences to pamper and refresh.

So how do you achieve bathroom luxury through design and style?

By carefully choosing items that say luxury and using practical, tried and tested bathroom design elements.

Getting it right from the start, will achieve a wonderful space, a luxurious spa-like bathroom to relax and reignite you for the day ahead.

Getting the luxe bathroom design of your dreams

When you are designing your custom new home, you want to take your new bathrooms to the next level.  If you are unsure how to translate luxury into the space, well read on.

So, what makes the bathroom a luxurious space?  It is the addition of luxury inclusions that all play a part in the feel, look and texture of the space.

Here’s an amazing list of items you should consider adding to your new custom home bathrooms –

Smart technology

Connect your bathroom with your smart home devices for the ultimate in custom bathroom control.  Look for personalised temperature control and bathtub fill control options.  Even the toilet can be smart – think hands-free automatic lids, seat warmers and night lights.  Smart LED mirrors with a built-in display for weather, traffic and news reports or your diary.  Hop in a smart shower where you set the temperature, flow rate and duration through your smart device.

Some of these products aren’t available in Australia yet, but watch this space, it won’t be long!

Lighting

How’s this for mood lighting in the bathroom – set the amount of light you need.

Look at your bathroom lighting as the mood setter.  You’ll need task lighting for those attention to detail activities like makeup application right down to some soft, mood lighting for long warm baths to bring on the relaxation.  Introduce some decadence with a chandelier over the bathtub.  With the touch of a button, change the colour of your lighting to match your mood.

Quality finishes and products

Using the highest quality materials and products will always deliver timeless style for the ultimate bathing experience.

Blur the boundary

between bathroom and the outdoors.  Bathrooms that open to a private courtyard filled with greenery and natural materials provide that ultimate soothing from nature.  If you don’t have the space or privacy is an issue, try floor to ceiling windows to bring as much nature into the space.  Alternatively, bring nature into the bathroom with a vertical garden wall filled with luscious multi-green foliage.

Add some features

Our client for our Northwood build wanted total pampering with a sauna in their luxury bathroom design.

Doing things a little different will separate your bathroom from the pack.  Nothing says luxury than a sunken bath or placing the tub in the centre of the bathroom.  Then add a fireplace, now that’s what bathing is all about!

Underfloor heating

You may not see it but the feeling of this beautiful warmth under your feet on a cold, dark morning is amazing.  The best part of this type of heating is when you need to go to the toilet in the middle of the night – no more shocking cold tiles!

Double the luxury

Anything doubled in the bathroom, adds that extra pampering space.  If you have the room, look at double vanities, double showers, bathtubs or even toilets.

Elements to consider when designing your bathroom

The overall design of your bathroom using layout and style, can transform your bathroom into luxurious, sophisticated space.

Layout

If you are building a custom new home, you can start from scratch with your bathroom design.  Talk to your architect to discuss where the bathrooms will be located and look at the space you have to work with.

There’s a lot to pack into a bathroom, so every centimetre counts.  Play around with different layouts as this is the best way to find that one plan that will work best in the space you have.  There are so many different size PC items to fit into difficult spaces so have a good look at what is available in the market.

For larger spaces, move away from the four walls.  Build dividing walls or half walls across the shower and place the bathtub against the other side, to create new zones for luxury bathing.

If you are renovating it is often cheaper to follow the original layout as plumbing and electrical do not need to be moved.  This can sometimes be false economy as a different layout could make a huge difference to the function and look of your bathroom.  It may be worth considering different layout options.

Style

The bathroom style should be in sympathy with the overall house design.  It doesn’t have to match completely but will look great if there is some synergy between them.

Is your house modern or classic?  Start with your house style first.

Modern bathrooms usually have straight, clean lines, geometric shapes, neutral or monochrome colours, natural materials (or convincing reproductions) and are uncluttered.

Wallpaper in the bathroom

Compliment your tiles with wallpaper.

Think floating vanities, freestanding tubs, rain showers, concrete sinks or vanity benchtop, backlit mirrors. For an expansive master suite, open the bathroom to dressing room and bedroom.

From stark to serene. How do you warm up and add some luxury to a modern bathroom?  Simply add flowers, greenery, candles, soft lighting, wallpaper, a touch of glam, lots of plush towels, artwork or a rug.  Add a heated towel rail for that extra pampering softness and warmth.

Shiny black subway tiles

Big attitude with shiny, black subway tiles

A classic styled bathroom creates an inviting, inspiring space with a timeless style using white ceramicware, walls in soft colours or moody hues, natural materials like stone, wood and metals, with marble tiles. A freestanding pedestal and bathtub makes a beautiful focal point in any classic bathroom.

Design the classic bathroom as part of the living space – turn it from hygiene and function to your own private retreat.

Think black and white, roll-top tub, vanity in an iron console, or a crystal chandelier for old school glamour, brass or copper tapware.  Polished tiles in subway, scalloped or hexagonal shape.
